What were the Ancient Olympics?

The Ancient Olympics was a sporting event held every four years at the site of Olympia in western Peloponnese. The games were held in honor of Zeus, the most powerful and influential God in the greek religion. The games recieved spectators and participants from all over Greece. The games were the most important cultural event In Ancient Greece and were held from 776 BCE to 393 CE. Their were 293 consecutive olympiads and the games were so important that they were used as a basis for the calendar.
